Descript and Avocado both clone voices and generate speech, but they’re built around different jobs.
Descript is an editor first
Descript is a full editor for podcasts and video. AI speech is woven in: you can generate a line with a stock voice or your own AI Speaker and drop it into your edit. To make an AI Speaker of your own voice, you record a consent statement that Descript checks. If editing is your day, Descript does a lot that Avocado doesn’t.
Avocado is a voice studio
Avocado is just for voices, and it does them on your Mac. Pick from the open models you’ve added, clone a voice you have permission to use, design one from a description or train one on your recordings. Finished takes can be edited too: change the emotion or pace, add a laugh, clean up noise. Then export WAV, AIFF or M4A into whatever editor you use, including Descript.
The short version
